SCHWULST MAGAZINE

Portfolio - Karim Konrad’s Berlin Gay Mates

by Julien Beyle, in Films & Books , posted 21 June 2007
When I come across something really surprising amidst the hundredth Bel Ami book, Howard Roffman’s fiftieth twink collection and the umpteenth issue of “XYfoto” with photographs by Sean Bentz in the male photography section of the bookshop, that’s truly a joy. I was given such a joy when I noticed Karim Konrad’s “Berlin Gay Mates.” It’s not a large book, but with 368 pages it’s a fat book. And then to realize that there are even more photographs in it!Karim Konrad is a rather young photographer, born in 1979, and his models stem from the same generation. Moreover, these are clearly pure city lads. I don’t know how you can know this: the occasional tattoo in odd spots, the Prince Albert piercing in a dick, the standard shaved genitals, the dildos and other sex toys, or the shocking pink wig on model Marcel Schlutt’s head? Whatever it might be, these guys are urban, cosmopolitan and eroticism emanating city dwellers and not fresh country boys. This suggestion is furthered by the, often crammed, colorful apartments in which Konrad has situated his models.
Fellow photographer Reed Massengill calls Konrad’s photos “coloured orgies,” which Konrad endorses whole-heartedly and which is his way of capturing the energy of Berlin: “The best way to interpret that energy is to show it through a lot of colours. This city has so many crazy worlds, sexy types and coolness.” Konrad experiences the German capital as a brimming mix of “chaos, good food, damn beautiful men, heartbreaks, fast love, culture, crazy people, artists, liberty and good bars.” In his photographs he tries to style this hectic atmosphere and since some of those “damn beautiful men” obliged him by posing in front of his camera, “Berlin Gay Mates” is a book to enjoy, even if you’re not one of those aficionados of urban bustle yourself.

The Sexy Boys of BerlinPhotographer Karim Konrad’s Uber Hot Berlin Gay Mates Article Date: 09/12/2007
By Duane Wells
Visionary young photographer, Karim Konrad, paints an intimate portrait of his relationship with the city of Berlin and the men that inhabit in his cheeky and playful tome Berlin Gay Mates.
Featuring a veritable manscape of Berlin’s most beautiful boys in the most colorful and whimsical of settings, Berlin Gay Mates exhales the quirky essence of Karim Konrad’s parade of German beauties with intoxicating results. Flipping through page after page of boys with piercings, boys in wigs, boys in bathtubs, boys with Prince Alberts and so on and forth will not only leave you with a highly revved up libido, it might just find you booking a ticket to Berlin in a trancelike state.
A recent transplant to Sydney, Australia, Karim shared with me the best of Berlin and the love and inspiration the city has given him over the years, but I’ll be damned if he would tell me where to find all the yummy models feautred in his book. Oh well… you can’t win them all. Boys and girls… meet Karim Konrad and his Berlin!

DW: So Karim, you described Berlin Gay Mates as a "declaration of love for Berlin". What is it that makes you love Berlin so much?

KK: Chaos, good food, fast love, heartbreaks, culture, liberty, good bars, big [night] clubs, cheap flats in cool areas, artists, crazy people, free space, expansion… It's a city of losers & winners. Melancholy and euphoria live here so close together.

DW: And what is it that makes the men of Berlin so very special?

KK: They are damn beautiful, open minded, multicultural & international!

DW: What are your favorite places in Berlin?

KK: All places around Kreuzberg! [It’s] The Turkish area of Berlin.

DW: If you had to direct an American tourist to only five places that would give them a reason to love Berlin as much as you, what would those five places to be?

KK: Oranienstreet in summer by night--sitting on the crowded street, drinking beer and listening to bands that just feel free to perform!
Badeschiff—[It’s] s a swimming pool built into our river "The Spree". In summer [you can] swim and relax in it between the sexiest babes and in winter [you can] sauna.
Berghain & Panaroma Bar—The best club in the world. Hard, rough, fuckin’ cool music [in] a fat dreary location. [It’s] A party organized by the devil himself!
Eat at "Yellow Sunshine"—The best vegetarian burgers and vegan food u can get in Berlin! It’s in Wienerstr. near U ´Station Görlitzer Bahnhof
Finally hop on a train towards Friedrichshain and get out on U Train Warschauerstr and have a [look and a] gasp from the city on the bridge towards S Station Warschauerstr! If you like that panorama you will understand and love Berlin!

DW: So I'm going to be honest and say that I've been to Berlin only once about a decade ago and I didn't have the greatest time. What should I do differently the next time?

KK: Catch yourself an insider [who] lives in Berlin. The tourists mostly see the shit of Berlin [from] a tourist guide. You’ve got to be informed on what’s recent… open! All the underground parties, bars and exhibitions!

DW: Now back to the book, how did you go about choosing the models for the book? And how did you get them to where some of those outfits? I howled in laughter at the pics of a very masculine Rene in heels and an apron. The playful contradiction in that particular series is amazing.

KK: Thanks a lot!! Artists needs applause! (laugh) Oh I just chose them intentionally. For Berlin Gay Mates I wanted to have a wide range of Berlin guys from a lawyer to a pornstar, from a butch to golden boy.

DW: How would you describe your photographic style?

KK: Humorous, sexy, colorful, a bit trashy, authentic... Just a fun kind of style.

DW: How do you decide upon how you're going to photograph a model? What makes you decide to put one in a wig or accessorize another with fruit or dildos?

KK: Oh that depends on what story I like to tell with the series. Depends on a lot of points.

DW: Do you have a dream subject… any person in the world (living or dead) that you'd love to shoot? How would you shoot him/here?

KK: Elvis Presley in swim trunks—the young one! I would shoot him at a place where we would get stuck and he would have to be with me the whole time.

DW: What photographers influenced you most?

KK: A lot of photographers influenced me. There are so many artists out there! But the first one I admired was Bruce Weber. I had his pictures hanging on the wall in my room when I was 12. Sounds like a gay classic, Huh?!

DW: Are you working on any new projects that you can tell our readers about?

KK: Oh yeah… I just moved to Sydney two days ago! ...So I will see what’s happening! I love the beaches here! They’re very inspirational—[smile]. So watch out! I'm coming back!

DW: Final question, on my next trip to Berlin, where do I go to find Dirk, Dennis and Rene from your book? [Smile]…But seriously please tell me!

KK: Ha! Ha! That’s the best kept secret! Watch out!

DW: Alright… alright. Okay, so really, final question. In what five nightclubs in Berlin would I be most likely to find a Berlin gay mate of my own???

KK: Berghain, GMF, Hafen, Bangaloo and maybe Roses.

DW: Duly noted. Thanks Karim!

INTERVIEW

The Boundaries Issue: Karim Konrad
Homo-Photog Captures Berlin's Sexiest

For today's installment of The Boundaries Issue, let's hop on over to Berlin, where photographer Karim Konrad has been hard at work snapping sexy shots of the German cities sexy men. After years of hardwork, he's finally published the end result: Berlin Gay Mates.
Some artists depict Berlin as a dank, gray playground for post-war depression. Konrad's pieces, however, rely as much on color-saturation as on an unspoken vibrancy: a refreshing, much needed burst of optimism for an increasingly daunting world. And the sexy, scantily clad (if at all) boys don't hurt, of course.
Though busy with the tiresome job of promoting the collection, Konrad sat down with Queerty to share his thoughts on coming-out, how Berlin's got a bad rap and why Roger Federer's one lucky man.
Queerty: Tell us about your childhood.
Karim Konrad: My childhood was a good one. I grew up in Heidelberg, Germany, with my brother and sister - I am the sandwich kid. We rarely watched TV, spent most of our time outside, played a lot of tennis, built tree houses, fed my guinea pig "Cesar" who grew to be nine years old, played "Knight Rider" or "He-Man" or listened to "Bibi Blocksberg" cassettes.
QT: How did your family react to your coming out?
KK: The reaction was good. My family loves me unconditionally, so this was never a problem. It’s horrible that some families still freak about their own kid's sexuality. It’s so absurd. Besides the offspring's sex life is none of their business. It's taken for granted that you respect your parents' privacy. It should be vice versa.
QT: How did you get into photography?
KK: [When] my parents bought their first camera. I was about eight years old then. It was a love relationship from the very first moment. I still have pictures where I shot of my then five-year old sister posing like a diva in her bedroom - this sounds like a gay classic!
QT: How much of your photography's composed? Obviously you set up the models and the scenario, but do you just snap, snap, snap, or do you take a few minutes for each shot?
KK: I am not a very patient man, so too much composing when the model is on the set can bore me. I love creating scenarios in the run up of the shooting. But when it comes to the shooting there is nothing better than a flashbulb storm.
QT: You say your new book comes from your love of Berlin. What's so great about Berlin?
KK: I will tell it in snap shots, otherwise it would crash the interview: Chaos, good food, damn beautiful men, fast love, heartbreaks, culture, liberty, good bars, big soundly clubs, cheap flats in cool areas, artists, crazy people, free space, expansion, open minded mentality, international and multicultural communities. It’s the city of losers and winners. Melancholy and euphoria live here close together.
QT: Many people picture Berlin as being dreary and industrial, but your pictures are so colorful! Why so much color? Where else do you find "color" in the world?
KK: Berlin is intense, that's true. But the industrial, dreary image of Berlin is so passé and eighties. This has always been an outsider’s perspective, which led to these repetitive clichés. Winter sucks here but as soon as the sun comes out, Berlin is vibrating with life. During summers certain districts and neighborhoods, like Kreuzberg for example, my favorite part of Berlin, even have a Mediterranean flair. Berlin is so diverse and rich in culture, but still has its unique identity as a city. I think you can find color everywhere, even in the darkest parts of the world! Everything about human nature is colorful. It's an attitude and my way of aestheticizing the world.
QT: If you weren't a photographer, what else would you be doing?
KK: I would be a professional tennis player. Since I was a child, I wanted to be a tennis star. I played more than 3 hours each day my entire teenager life. Hitting the ball was my joy and life. I adored Andre Agassi! But my parents wanted me to study and to go for a more educated career. So I never got the chance to be a gay Venus Williams on the ATP Tour. I would have my own fashion label and would kick Roger Federer from his throne.
QT: Do you know your models? If not, how do you select them?
KK: Instinctively. When I do not know them before, I get to know [them].
QT: What do you want your viewer to take away from your images?
KK: I want to tell stories with my pictures. With producing Berlin Gay Mates, I wanted to make people feel good when flipping through my book. I want the viewers to feel the energy and the spirit of my personal Berlin.

"Berlin Gay Mates" by Karim Konrad
My readers know that I never post random pictures of hot guys on my blog. That's not my mission. Usually I write about personal things in my life. But here's an exception.Back when we still had our gay magazine I was always searching for gay artists to write about their art. We usually had three or four pages featuring a gay artist each issue. Some were amazing, I liked many things I've seen, and I think I've seen pretty much and quite different things.About two months ago I got an email from Karim Konrad. He's a photographer who has just published "Berlin Gay Mates", his first book of photographs. He introduced himself briefly and sent some of his pictures. When I looked at them I was completely amazed. I can't really say why. I tried it in in German when I wrote my review. I'm not really able to put it in words. But I've never seen pictures like that before. They're colorful, they're bright. It's a candy-coated potpourri of flamboyant colors and erotic guys, of innocent mirth and horny admiration.I like the composition of the pictures. It's a completely new style (for me), and it just works.Quite often a picture taken by the featured artist was used as cover for our magazine. Usually I can estimate the success of a cover. The cover is very important. When we had a good cover, the magazine was out of stock in two or three days. If the cover was not perfect, we had to throw some magazines into the recycle bin when the next issue got published. But I'm sure, one of those pictures on our cover and they would be fighting for the last copies. Unfortunately we're on a break and won't be publishing a new issue before June 2007.I asked Karim if I may write about his book on my blog, and he gave me permission to do so. I'm glad I can show his photographs here, because I think they're really cool. I love those colorful accessoires together with the hot guys. Ok buddies, check out Karim's Homepage at http://www.karimkonrad.com/, there are more cool pictures. posted by Rian
